Discovery Place Kids

Yesterday we took Dalton for his bi-weekly appointment to get his helmet adjusted.  His therapist said everything looked great and we hit the nail on the head for going every 2 weeks instead of every week.  It's not too bad on the wallet either with the gas prices these days!  His head grew 3 mm and she shaved some more foam out of the inside of the helmet to make room for head growth.  I had also redecorated on Thursday with sand, crabs, sun, starfish and a palm tree.  It says "Beach Bum" on the back!  It is so cute!

Sorry for the bad picture, this came off of Trey's phone
We took Luke to Charlotte with us for the first time yesterday as well.  With school being out, Trey and I were both able to go and we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to take Luke and check out some of the neat things for him in Charlotte.  I had my mind set on Discovery Place in downtown and all Luke talked about was going to the museum and being a "doctor" (he had remembered this from last summer when we went to the Greenville Children's Museum and he dressed up as a vet).  I knew Discovery Place had a section for younger kids but I wasn't sure if it was worth the money.  While talking to Dalton's therapist, Lisa, (who is AWESOME by the way) she asked us if we were going to the Discovery Place Kids in Huntersville, NC.  She said it was only 20 min away and was perfect for Luke's age!  Boy was she right!  That place was PHENOMENAL!  It is completely geared for younger kids.  I would say the ideal age range is baby to about age 8.  They had a small area for the little babies (Dalton had fun at the water table) and the rest was right up Luke's alley!  I recommend it to anyone.  It only cost $8 per person to go and we stayed for about 2 hours.  Luke would have stayed all day but we had a 2 hour drive home!  We will definitley go back!

A whirlwind of a weekend!

This weekend was one of my favorite weekends...THE POULTRY FESTIVAL!  It is three days of fun and it is always hot!  We kicked off the weekend with family night at the fest.  We took Luke to ride the rides and he loved it!  He is pretty fearless!  Mom came into town on Friday and we laid low that night and my dad came into town Saturday morning.  We took Luke to the parade Saturday morning and then looked at all the crafts.  We didn't do much the rest of the day but then went down on Main St. later that night and listened to some great beach music!  We had so much fun (aside from waiting out the rain in the fire department).  We had some late nights but Luke really enjoyed himself this year!

Sunday night, the kids group at our church put on their final performance before the summer begins! It was a cowboy theme and the kids got to ride into the fellowship hall on their stick horses. It was so cute! I was so proud of Luke for saying his line and for singing so well! He loves to sing and dance! The kids put on a great performance and I was so proud of my little man!

Dalton's New Do

Yesterday Trey and I drove up to Charlotte to get Dalton's DOC Band.  If you're not familiar with the DOC band, it's a helmet for babies to correct flat spots on the head.  When Dalton was born, I noticed immediately that he always slept on his left side.  So, at hs 2 month check-up the pediatrician and I discussed ways to correct this at home first.  So, we did extra tummy time, offered toys on the right side and after he would fall asleep, I would go and move his head to the right side.  I noticed a bit of a change but not much.  At his 4 month appointment, the pediatrician reevaluated Dalton and we decided that he would be referred to Cranial Technologies in Charlotte for a consult.  I knew that this was coming but I was still a little upset after I knew this would be a definite.

So, a month ago, Trey and I took Dalton up to Charlotte for his initial consultation.  They did a photo study of his head and diagnosed him with plagiocephaly and torticollis.  The plagiocephaly is the flattening of the head and the torticollis is where one side of his neck muscles is tighter than the other, causing him to favor one side over the other.  We were told that no amount of repositoning would correct this and so we needed to get a DOC band.  This is obviously, not mandatory and we could keep trying repostioning therapy and extra tummy time but we knew that we had done this for months and the results were not great.  So, we opted to get the DOC band.  I will say, that I've see babies with these on before and had no idea what they were for, until now.

After a month of waiting on the insurance to approve everything we finally went back to Charlotte two weeks ago so Dalton could get fitted for a band.  I thought they would make a mold using some sort of casting method but they use a very high resolution digital camera.  They take pictures with the camera and use that image to make the mold.  It's really neat and takes no time at all, that is, if the baby is cooperative.

So, yesterday the band was ready for Dalton!  Trey and I drove up and we had Dalton fitted with it.  It's plastic on the outside and is lined with thick foam.  The band itself is very lightweight, only weighing a few ounces.  Now, you may be wondering how this whole thing works.  Well, we will be taking Dalton every week, yes EVERY WEEK, to have Dalton's head measured and the band adjusted.  Each week, they will shave a few millimeters off the helmet to make room for head growth.  At first we were told he would have to wear it for 3-6 months but then they said only 2-3 months.  We're hoping for the 2-3 month window, especially with gas prices the way they are!

Here is Dalton in his new DOC band!  He doesn't mind it one bit!

Of course, they are all white so we needed to add a little flair to it!  My mom brought her cri-cut down and we cut pictures out of vinyl to put on the helmet.  This is just the front.  We added his name and a cricket.  On the back, it has grass and caterpillars.

The Greatest Show on Earth!

Thursday night we took Luke to the circus!  We didn't tell him that we were going until the day before and he was so excited!  All he talked about was seeing the clowns!  We ended up getting great tickets on the 6th row with some friends from church.  Of course, we were 30 minutes late because we went to eat before and were late getting the food.  So, we missed the tigers but Luke didn't know any different so we didn't tell him!  Luke loved it!  He was in awe the entire time.  We sat right in front of the trapeze artists and I think Luke got nervous every time they did something.  He kept burying his head into me whenever they would do an act!

Snow Day!

Whew...what a crazy couple of days!  The snow started coming down early Monday morning and by the afternoon it quickly turned into ice.  Monday Luke had a great time playing in the snow.  I didn't have to venture out into the cold because I had Dalton as an excuse to stay inside (thank goodness!).  Trey had the pleasure of making a snowman with Luke.  Of course, it had to be Buzz Lightyear!  We made snowcream and later Luke's friend Jack came over and they went sledding for a couple of hours!  We ended the fun filled day with homemade hot chocolate ( I didn't have any instant!).  Luke had a ball!  We have had cabin fever for the past few days but finally got out of the house Wednesday night to eat supper!

 SNOW!!

 He's ready to play!

This is what Dalton did most of his snow day!
